How is your net salary calculated?

Your net salary is what you actually receive in your account every month. To calculate this, the tax authority deducts wage tax from your gross salary. Wage tax consists of income tax and national insurance premiums (AOW, ANW, WLZ).

The Netherlands has two tax brackets in 2026. On the first €38,441 you pay 36.97% tax. On income above that you pay 49.5%. But thanks to the employment credit and general tax credit, you pay less in practice.

What is gross vs. net?

Gross salary is the amount stated in your employment contract. Net salary is what remains after deduction of taxes and premiums. The difference can be 40% or more, depending on your income.

How does the 30% ruling work?

The 30% ruling is a tax benefit for international employees who come to the Netherlands from abroad. Your employer may reimburse 30% of your salary tax-free as compensation for the extra costs of living in a new country. This significantly reduces your taxable income.
